Reminiscences and family papers. 1829-1938.

Reminiscences of Mildred Snowden (later Demaine), 1860-ca. 1882. Includes very good account of her domestic and social life as a child in Abbotsford, description of her father's garden, flower shows, and school life at Torrington House, Fitzroy. Reminiscences were written in 1933 and an appendix was added in November 1938. Also, letter to her father Sir Arthur Snowden from his brother E.G. Snowden in London, 30 November 1853, and certificates of Sir Arthur Snowden (baptism certificate 1829, marriage certificate 1856, gold licence 1853, ticket to Melbourne on the ship "Great Britain" 1852, and inviatation to Mildred's wedding 1882). Also, press cuttings (undated) regarding the family garden and Mildred's wedding, and a poem "A bridal acostic" by C.A. McNaughton, Abbotsford, 23 November 1882.

Mildred Snowden was born at Abbotsford, Vic. in 1860. The family property on which she grew up was called "St. Helliers". She married Robert Alfred Demaine on 23 November 1882. Her father, Sir Arthur Snowden began practising law in 1867 and developed a strong interest in local public health and sanitation, including raising awareness of the pollution of the Yarra and its effects on nearby residents. In 1891 he was elected to Melbourne City Council and was elected mayor of Melbourne in 1892, 1893...
